An investment is the act of putting money, time, or effort into something in order to get a benefit later. It is often used in business and finance for money put into companies, property, or projects. It can also describe serious effort made for future success.

investment は invest + -ment と見て覚えると残りやすいです。まず動詞 invest「投資する」を知り、-ment が付くと action / result を表す名詞になり investment「投資」。使う場面も一緒に覚えると強く残り、make an investment, investment in education, foreign investment などが定番です。spending は使って終わるお金、investment は将来のリターンを期待して入れるお金という違いを意識すると混同しにくくなります。

investment の語源・成り立ち Etymology
investment はラテン語 investire にさかのぼり、in-「中へ」+ vest-「衣服を着せる」+ -ment で成ります。もとは「衣をまとわせる」ことなので、お金を別の形に“着せ替えて”利益を生むという感覚で、vest や divest も同根です。
Investment ultimately goes back to Latin investire, made from in- and a root related to clothing, like vestis. It first meant "to clothe" or "cover," and later developed the sense of putting something into a role or position. From there, it came to mean putting money into something as if giving it a new form or use. Related English words include vest and divest.
