invest はラテン語 investire に由来し、in-「中へ」+ vestire「衣を着せる」から成ります。もとは「着せる・身につけさせる」でしたが、そこから「権限や資金を与える」へ広がり、vest や divest と同じ語根です。
Invest comes from Latin investire, made from in- "into" and vestire "to clothe." It originally meant to dress or cover someone, and then to clothe someone with rank, office, or authority.
