diffusion の語源・成り立ち Etymology
diffusion はラテン語 diffundere 由来で、dif-「四方へ」+ fundere「注ぐ」。液体をあちこちへ注ぎ広げる感覚が、そのまま「拡散」になった。関連語の infuse や profuse も同じく「注ぐ」発想を持つ。
Diffusion comes from Latin diffundere, made from dif- "out in different directions" and fundere "to pour." The original picture is of liquid being poured and spreading widely. That image later became the general idea of something spreading out through space or among people. Infuse and profuse come from the same Latin root.
