ラテン語 cappa（頭を覆うもの・フード付き外套）からプロヴァンス語経由で英語に入った。同根語に cap（帽子）や captain（頭＝かしら）がある。体を覆う布地の意味から、肩掛けの袖なし外套「ケープ」となった。
