解説 Definition
scan は、書類や画像を機械で読み取ること、またはその読み取り結果を意味する名詞です。日本語の「スキャン」とほぼ同じですが、英語では医療検査の画像や検査そのものにもよく使われます。
A scan is the process or result of examining or recording something systematically with a device. It may be a digital copy of a document or image, or a medical examination and the image produced by it.

scan の語源・成り立ち Etymology
scan は名詞でも動詞由来で、後期ラテン語 scandere「詩の韻律を刻む」、さらに古典ラテン語の「登る」にさかのぼります。詩を一歩ずつ数える感覚から「順に細かく見る」へ意味が広がり、今の「スキャン」になりました。関連語は scansion, scanner。
The noun scan developed from the verb scan. That verb came through Late Latin scandere in the specialized sense of marking the metrical pattern of verse, from classical Latin scandere, “to climb.” Counting poetic feet suggested moving through a line step by step. The meaning later broadened to examining something closely or successively, and modern technology extended it to systematic electronic reading and medical imaging. Scansion preserves the older poetic sense.
