ラテン語 resistere（re- 反対に + sistere 立つ）の現在分詞形から。「立ち向かって持ちこたえる」が原義。関連語に resist（抵抗する）、insist（主張する＝上に立ち続ける）がある。
Resistant comes from Latin resistere, made from re- meaning "back" and sistere meaning "stand." The original image was "to stand back against" something. From that idea, the word came to mean able to withstand force, harm, or change. Related English words include resist and insist.
