Receptive comes from Medieval Latin receptivus, from Latin recipere, meaning "to receive" or "take back." That verb is built from re- and capere, "to take," the same root seen in receive and recipient. The word developed from the idea of being able to take something in, and so came to mean open and ready to accept ideas, feelings, or influence.
