feed（供給する）+ back（戻す）の複合語。feed は古英語 fēdan（養う・食べさせる）に由来。元は電子工学で出力信号を入力に戻す仕組みを指した。関連語に food（食べ物）、foster（育てる）がある。「結果を元に戻して次に活かす」という仕組みが転じ、意見・反応の意味に広がった。
Feedback is a modern compound of feed and back. Feed comes from Old English fēdan, meaning to nourish or supply. The word first belonged to engineering, where part of an output is sent back into a system as input. From that idea, it widened to mean comments or reactions used to improve something.
