スクリーニングとは多数の対象から目的に合ったものだけを選び出す作業を指します。入社候補者や出演者などに対して事前に選考基準を当てはめてふるいにかける場面でも使われます。また、品質や健康に問題がないかを判断するための検査・調査を意味することもあります。

中英語 screen（仕切り・ふるい）はゲルマン語系の古フランス語 escren（盾・仕切り）に由来し、動詞 screen（選別する）に動名詞語尾 -ing が付いた形。原義は「ふるいにかけて分ける」こと。関連語に screen（画面＝映像を映す幕）がある。映画の上映も選別も「幕を通す」という共通イメージから派生した。
`Screening` comes from the verb `screen` plus `-ing`. `Screen` came through Old French from a Germanic word meaning a barrier, shield, or partition. From the idea of separating or protecting with a screen, the verb developed the sense of filtering or selecting. The same word also produced the cinema sense, where a `screen` is the surface that images are shown on.
