重要な情報や状況について誰かに知らせて理解させること。
To clue someone in means to give them information they need in order to understand a situation. It is an informal expression often used when someone has been left unaware and needs to be updated.

clue は「手がかり」。まずこの基本語を押さえると、clue in は「相手に手がかりを与えて状況をわからせる」と考えやすいです。単なる tell より、「事情を共有して理解させる」感じが強め。よく clue someone in on ... の形で使い、「…について事情を知らせる」。fill someone in と近いですが、clue in は相手が見えていなかった全体像をつかませる感覚で覚えると残りやすいです。

clue in の語源・成り立ち Etymology
clue in は clue「手がかり」+ in から成り、clue は古英語 cliwen「糸玉」に由来し、迷路を導く糸から「謎を解く手がかり」へ発展しました。clueless や古形 clew も同根で、相手の頭に糸口を入れて事情をわからせる感覚が「知らせる」です。
Clue comes from an older form, clew, from Old English cliwen, meaning "a ball of thread." The word shifted from an actual thread that guides someone through a maze to a hint that helps solve a problem. From that, clue in developed the sense of giving someone the needed information; clueless is from the same root.
