mislead は古英語系の mis-「悪く・誤って」＋ lead「導く」から成る語です。leader や leading と同じ語根をもち、「案内を誤って人を違う方向へ連れていく」感覚から「誤解を招く」の意味になりました。
Mislead combines mis-, meaning "wrongly" or "badly," with lead. The original image is of guiding someone in the wrong direction. From that physical sense, it came to mean causing someone to believe something false.
