To hoodwink someone means to trick or deceive them so they believe something false. It is used when a person is cleverly misled, often on purpose for advantage. The word is slightly informal and often suggests dishonesty.

hoodwink は、まず wink を「ウィンクする」より「目をつぶる」と捉えると覚えやすいです。相手の目をくらませて truth を見えなくし、そのすきに信じ込ませるイメージ。単なる trick より、話術や見せかけでうまくだます感じが強く、deceive に近いですが少し古風で物語的です。hoodwink voters, hoodwink the public のように、相手がだまされていると気づいていない場面とセットで覚えると定着します。

hoodwink は hood「頭巾で覆う」と wink「まぶたを閉じる」が合わさった語で、もとは「目隠しする」が原義です。そこから「見えなくしてだます」へ転じ、hood や wink を知ると、欺きが「視界を奪うこと」から来たと納得できます。
