expedienceはラテン語expedientiaに由来し、expedire「足のもつれを解いて進める」が原形です。ex-「外へ」＋ped-「足」で、expediteやimpedeも同根。『足さばきよく進められること』が、便宜や得策の意味へ育ちました。
Expedience comes from Latin expedientia, from expedire, which originally meant "to free the feet" or "untangle for movement." It combines ex-, "out," with ped-, "foot." From the idea of removing what slows movement, it developed into the sense of what is practical or convenient; expedite and impede are related.
