英語 up（上へ）+ date（日付）の複合語。「日付を最新の状態に引き上げる」が原義で、19世紀に登場した比較的新しい語。upgrade（格上げ）やupload（上げる）も同じ up- の接頭辞を持つ。情報を「今の日付まで引き上げる」という発想が核心。
Update is made from up and date. Its original idea was to bring something up to the current date, so it matched the present time. From there, it broadened to mean making information, software, or plans current again. Other words like upgrade and upload use the same up- idea of moving higher or forward.
