connecting は connect の現在分詞で、語源はラテン語 conectere「結び合わせる」です。これは con-「共に」+ nectere「結ぶ」から成り、もともと「一緒に結ぶ」が原義なので、「接続する」の意味がそのまま見えてきます。関連語は connection と nexus です。
