fence の語源・成り立ち Etymology
fenceは中英語でdefenseの短縮形として生まれ、もとは「守るもの」「防御」を意味しました。そこから「外敵を防ぐ囲い」へ意味が具体化し、今の「フェンス」に定着。関連語はdefend, fender。
Fence began in Middle English as a shortened form of defence. At first it meant protection or a means of defending. Later the meaning became more concrete and referred to a barrier that keeps danger out, which led to the modern sense of a fence.
