commentary の語源・成り立ち Etymology
commentary はラテン語 commentarius「注釈・覚え書き」に由来します。comment と同系で、考えを書き添える感覚から、対象への意見や分析を述べる「論評」へ広がりました。
Commentary comes from the Latin word commentarius, meaning "notes" or "memorandum." It is related to comment and originally had the sense of adding written remarks. From that idea, it developed into the meaning of giving opinions or analysis about a subject.
