commentator は comment「注釈する」と -ator「〜する人」から成るラテン語系の語です。comment はさらにラテン語 commentum / comminisci「考えて記す」にさかのぼり、comment・commentary と同根なので、「説明を加える人」から今の『解説者』になったと分かります。
Commentator is built from comment and the ending -ator, meaning "a person who does something." Comment goes back through Latin to commentum and comminisci, with the idea of thinking out, planning, or writing notes. So the word originally meant someone who adds explanation or remarks.
