extinct はラテン語 exstinctus に由来し、ex-「外へ」+ stinguere「火を消す・突き消す」で、元は火を完全に消すことでした。extinguish も同じ語根を持ち、種の命の火が消えたと考えると「絶滅した」の意味が腑に落ちます。

It is built from ex- "out" and a verb meaning "to extinguish," and it was first used for putting out a fire.
