Extant means still existing now, especially when many similar things no longer exist. It is often used for old documents, works of art, buildings, or species. This word is formal and common in academic or historical writing.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
exist（存在する）を知っていれば、その中でも「昔から消えず、今でも確認できるもの」が extant だと押さえると覚えやすいです。existing が単に「存在している」なのに対し、extant は historical records, extant manuscripts のように、古い文書・作品・種などが失われず残っている場面でよく出ます。present「現在の」よりも、“現物や記録がちゃんと残存している”感じ。extinct（絶滅した）とつづりが少し似るので、「extant は残っている、extinct は消えた」と対比で固定すると混同しにくくなります。
Connect extant with exist, but make it more specific: something old that still survives now. It often appears with manuscripts, records, or species that have not disappeared. A useful contrast is extinct: extant is still here, extinct is gone.

extant の語源・成り立ち Etymology
extant はラテン語 ex-「外へ」+ stare「立つ」からできた extare「外に立っている」に由来する。つまり「まだ姿を現して立っている」が原義で、失われず今も残る「現存する」という意味になった。関連語は exist, stable。
Extant comes from Latin extare, built from ex- meaning "out" and stare meaning "to stand." It originally meant something like "stand out" or "be visible." From the idea of still standing in view, it came to mean something that has survived and still exists today.
