pundit はサンスクリット pandita『学識のある人』がヒンディー語・ウルドゥー語 pandit を経て英語化した語です。英語での細かな接辞分解は薄いものの、核には『よく知る人』の感覚があり、punditry も同根で、単なる発言者でなく“知で語る人”が評論家になったと分かります。
Pundit came into English from Hindi and Urdu pandit, which goes back to Sanskrit pandita, meaning a learned or wise person.
