whose は古英語 hwæs にさかのぼり、who の属格「だれの」をそのまま受け継いだ語です。語幹 wh- に所有を示す古い語尾がついた形で、who や whom と並べると「人をたずねる語が持ち主まで表す」と見えてきます。
