whose は「誰の」という所有をたずねたり示したりする語で、疑問文では持ち主を質問するときに、関係節では人や物が何を所有しているかを説明するときに使う。ふつうは名詞の前に置かれ、所有の関係を簡潔に表す働きをする。
Whose is used to ask or show which person something belongs to. It often comes before a noun, such as a name, bag, or idea. It can also connect two parts of a sentence when talking about possession.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
whose は who 系列の「所有版」として覚えると定着しやすい。who が「だれ」、whom が目的格なら、whose は「だれの」。形が似た who's は who is / who has の短縮で、whose とは別物なのでまずここを区別する。疑問文では Whose bag is this? のように持ち主を聞き、関係節では the boy whose bike was stolen のように「その人の〜」を後ろから説明できる。人だけでなく物にも使えるので、「所有を示す who の形」とまとめると覚えやすい。
Think of `whose` as the possession form of `who`. `Who` asks about a person, and `whose` asks about that person’s thing. Be careful not to confuse it with `who's`, which is short for `who is` or `who has`.

whose は古英語 hwæs にさかのぼり、who の属格「だれの」をそのまま受け継いだ語です。語幹 wh- に所有を示す古い語尾がついた形で、who や whom と並べると「人をたずねる語が持ち主まで表す」と見えてきます。
Whose goes back to Old English hwæs, the genitive form of who. It kept the old sense of "of whom" or "belonging to whom." It is part of the same family as who and whom, showing an older way English marked possession in question words.
