ラテン語 legendārius（読むべきもの）から、legere（読む）+ 接尾辞 -ārius に分解できる。元は聖人伝など「読み聞かせる物語」を指した。関連語：legend（伝説）、legible（読みやすい）。「読まれる物語」が転じて「伝説的な」という意味になった。
Legendary comes from legend, which goes back to Latin legendarius, based on legere, "to read." At first it referred to stories that were read aloud, especially religious ones such as saints' lives. From "a story worth reading," it later developed into the sense of something famous in story and tradition, as in legend and legible.
