legend は「伝説」で先に覚えがちですが、地図やグラフでは「記号の意味を読むための説明欄＝凡例」です。地図の隅に、小さな線・色・マークとその説明が並ぶ箱を思い浮かべましょう。check the legend（凡例を確認する）、the legend explains the colors（凡例が色を説明する）が定番。key も同じ意味で使われますが、legend は特に地図・図表に添えられた説明部分、と場面ごと固定すると混同しにくいです。

ラテン語 legenda（読まれるべきもの）に由来し、古フランス語を経て英語に入りました。もとは読まれる物語や記録を指し、そこから語り継がれる話を表すようになりました。
