legend は「伝説」で先に覚えがちですが、地図やグラフでは「記号の意味を読むための説明欄＝凡例」です。地図の隅に、小さな線・色・マークとその説明が並ぶ箱を思い浮かべましょう。check the legend（凡例を確認する）、the legend explains the colors（凡例が色を説明する）が定番。key も同じ意味で使われますが、legend は特に地図・図表に添えられた説明部分、と場面ごと固定すると混同しにくいです。

legend は古フランス語 legende を経て、ラテン語 legenda「読まれるべきもの」に由来し、語根 leg- は「読む」。もとは聖人伝の朗読用文章で、そこから「語り継がれる話」の意となった。関連語は lecture、lesson。
Legend came into English through Old French legende from Latin legenda, meaning "things to be read." It is based on the Latin root leg-, meaning "read," also seen in lecture and lesson. At first it referred to texts about saints that were read aloud. Later it came to mean a traditional story passed down over time.
