ラテン語 forma（形、型）から派生した formāre（形作る）が語源。フランス語 format を経て英語に入り、もとは本の判型など「決まった大きさ・形」を指した。そこから文書の書式、番組や授業の構成、データのファイル形式など、「内容を収める型」という名詞の意味が広がった。
