Legenda is Latin, the neuter plural gerundive of legere, “to read,” and literally means “things that are to be read.” In medieval usage it became associated with readings about saints and with collections of saints’ lives. Words such as legible and lecture ultimately share the Latin root legere, although they entered English by different routes.
