apocryphal はギリシャ語 apokryphos「隠された」に由来し、apo-「離れて」＋kryptein「隠す」から成ります。もとは「人目に触れない書物」のことで、そこから「正典でない」「真偽不明の」という意味へ広がりました。関連語は crypt, cryptic。
