elision は「省略」全般ではなく、速い会話で音がつながるうちに一部が聞こえなくなる場面と結びつけると残りやすい。camera が camra のように聞こえる、I am が I'm になる、という“音声版 omit”の感覚で覚えるとよい。語尾 -sion は現象名なので、elide（音を落とす）→ elision（音の脱落）という対応も見える。ellipsis は文字・語の省略、elision は音の脱落で、ここを混同しないのがコツ。

elision は Latin e-「外へ」+ lidere「打って落とす」から来て、原義は「たたいて脱落させる」。elide や collision と同じ打撃の根をもち、音や文字が自然に消えるのでなく、発音の流れの中で押し落とされる感じが見える。
Elision comes from Latin elidere, from e- meaning "out" and laedere/lidere meaning "strike" or "knock down." The original sense was of something being knocked out or forced away.
