解説 Definition
カメラとは光学的な仕組みを用いて静止画や動画を記録する機器のことである。写真撮影用のカメラからビデオカメラ、スマートフォン内蔵カメラまで多岐にわたり、現代社会において広く使用されている。
A camera is a device that uses a lens and light-sensitive technology to capture still photographs or moving images. Cameras may be separate photographic or video devices or built into equipment such as smartphones, computers, vehicles, and security systems.

ラテン語 camera（丸天井の部屋）、さらにギリシャ語 kamara（アーチ型の部屋）に由来。暗い部屋に小さな穴から光を入れて像を映す camera obscura（暗い部屋）が写真機の原型となり、やがて装置自体を camera と呼ぶようになった。chamber（部屋）も同語根。
Camera comes from Latin camera, “vaulted room,” borrowed from Greek kamara, a vaulted chamber. Its modern meaning developed from the Latin expression camera obscura, literally “dark chamber.” This was a darkened room or box that projected an outside image through a small opening. As this optical arrangement evolved into photographic equipment, camera was shortened from the full expression and became the ordinary name for the image-recording device. Chamber is historically related.
