古英語 wyrgan「首を絞める、締めつける」に由来します。身体を苦しめる意味から、心が締めつけられるように悩む・心配する意味へ広がりました。
Worry comes from Old English wyrgan, meaning “to strangle” or “to choke.” Its meaning changed from physical pressure on the body to mental pressure, or feeling troubled and anxious.
