preoccupation は pre-「前もって」+ occupation から成り、occupation はラテン語 occupare「占める」にさかのぼります。心が先に占領されているので「夢中・先入観」の意になるわけです。occupy や occupant は同じ語根です。
Preoccupation comes from pre- meaning "before" and occupation, which comes from Latin occupare, meaning "to seize" or "take over." The idea is that the mind is already taken up in advance.
