後期ラテン語 concernere（con- 共に＋cernere ふるい分ける＝混ぜ合わせる→関わる）から。discern（見分ける）やcertain（確かな）と同根。物事が自分と「混ざり合って関わる」感覚から、気がかり・懸念の意味が生まれた。
