fix を知っていれば、fixation は「心や視線が fix された状態」と捉えると覚えやすいです。物を固定する fix が、注意や感情に起こると「ある一点から離れない執着」になります。a fixation on ... で「〜への執着」が頻出。interest や concern よりかなり強く、obsession に近いですが、特定の対象に意識が貼りついて動かない感じが出ます。fixated on ... も一緒に覚えると、名詞と形容のつながりで定着しやすいです。

fixationはfixに名詞化の-ationが付いた語。fixはラテン語figereの過去分詞fixus「しっかり打ちつける」に由来し、-ationは動作や状態を表す。『動かないよう留めること』が原義なので、固定や心が一点に張りつく意味にも自然につながる。関連語はaffix, prefix。
Fixation comes from fix with the noun ending -ation. Fix goes back to Latin figere, "to fasten," through its past participle fixus, meaning "fixed in place."
