何かに強く執着する、または注視する行為。心理学では過度な関心や執着を表す。
Fixating means giving too much attention to one thing and finding it hard to stop thinking about it. It is often used when someone becomes mentally or emotionally stuck on a person, idea, detail, or problem. It is commonly followed by "on".

fix を知っていると覚えやすい語。fix は「固定する」なので、fixate は視線・注意・感情が一つの対象に固定される感じ。fixating はその状態が続いて、「そのことばかり見ている／考えている」とイメージすると残りやすい。staring はただ見つめる、focusing は目的をもって集中する、obsessing はもっと重く不健全に取りつかれる、と並べると差が整理しやすい。be fixated on ... や stop fixating on ... の形でよく出るので、前置詞 on とセットで覚えると使いやすい。

fixating はラテン語 figere「打ちつけて固定する」の過去分詞 fixus から来た fix に、動詞化の -ate、進行の -ing が付いた形。注意や感情が一か所に『釘づけになる』感覚から、執着するという意味が生まれる。同根語に affix、transfix。
