To hold someone's attention so completely through surprise, fear, or fascination that the person seems unable to move. The verb is especially common in passive constructions with by.
The audience was transfixed by her performance
Think of trans- as “through” and fix as “fasten”: the image is of someone fixed in place by a powerful feeling. Remember the common pattern be transfixed by something.
The audience was transfixed by her powerful performance.
He stood transfixed as the building collapsed.
The documentary transfixed viewers around the world.

It comes from Latin transfigere, meaning “to pierce through,” combining trans- with figere, “to fix or pierce.” Its literal sense of fixing something by piercing developed into the figurative sense of making someone unable to move.
