headmaster は古英語由来の head「上・かしら」と、ラテン語 magister 由来の master から成る語。magister は「より大きい者」の感覚で、master や magistrate と同根なので、『学校のいちばん上に立つ教師』がそのまま校長になる。
"Headmaster" joins "head," from Old English, with "master," from Latin "magister" through French. "Magister" originally meant a person of greater authority or importance. So the word literally meant the master at the head, and it became the title for the main teacher in a school. "Master" and "magistrate" share the same Latin root.
