「headmistress」は head「上位の」+ mistress「女性の長・教師」からなり、後者は古フランス語 maistresse、さらにラテン語 magistra に由来する。master や magistrate と同根で、「学校の先頭に立つ女性」という像から校長の意味が自然に見える。
Headmistress is a compound of head, meaning "chief" or "leading," and mistress. Mistress came through Old French maistresse from Latin magistra, meaning a female leader or teacher. The word therefore meant the woman at the head of a school. It is related to master and magistrate, which share the same Latin root.
