主に、妻のいる男性と継続的な恋愛関係にある女性、つまり愛人を指す名詞。文脈によっては、家・屋敷・店などを取りしきる女性の主人、女主人の意味でも使われる。後者はやや古風・格式ばった表現として現れることが多い。
A mistress can mean a woman who has a sexual relationship with a married man, without being his wife. In older or formal use, it can also mean a woman who is in charge of a house or has authority, so the meaning depends strongly on context.
