側室

古い時代に、支配者や富裕層の男性が正式な結婚相手ではない女性を妾として迎えて同居させた関係を指します。法律上の正式な婚姻ではないので、正妻と比べて地位や権利が限定されることが多く、社会的な身分差により役割や扱いも変わってきます。家系や後継ぎの問題で子を産ませる役割を担うことが多く、歴史的に広く存在していました。

Concubine comes from Latin concubina, from con- "with" and cubare "to lie down." The original sense was a woman who lies with someone, especially in a sexual or domestic relationship.
