compass の語源・成り立ち Etymology
compass は古フランス語 compas、さらに俗ラテン語 *compassare にさかのぼり、com-（共に）+ passus（歩み）を含みます。もとは「歩いて測ること」で、関連語に pace、pass があり、歩幅で範囲や方向を測る感覚からコンパスの意味になりました。
"Compass" came from Old French "compas," from Vulgar Latin "compassare." It is linked to roots meaning "together" and "step," so the original idea was "measuring by steps." From that sense of marking out distance or limits, it later became the name of both the measuring tool and the instrument for finding direction; related words include "pace" and "pass."
