半円形または円形の定規で、角度を測定するための幾何学用具。通常は透明なプラスチックまたは金属製で、0度から180度のスケール目盛りが付いている。

ラテン語 protractus「前へ引き伸ばされた」が語源で、pro-「前へ」+ tract「引く」。本来は「線を引き延ばすもの」という感覚で、tract や attract と同根だと分かると、角度を測る道具名にも「引く」の発想が見えてきます。
Protractor comes from Latin protractus, from pro- "forward" and tract- "draw" or "pull." The basic idea was something drawn out or extended.
