caul は中英語を経て古フランス語 cale「ぴったりした帽子」に由来し、語源上は「帽子」の比喩が核です。接頭辞・接尾辞には分けにくい語ですが、calotte や calot と同系で、胎児を包む膜が頭巾のように見えたため「胞衣」を指すようになったとわかります。
