dueling は duel「決闘」+ -ing で、「一騎打ちすること」が原義。duel は中世ラテン語 duellum に由来し、古い形では「戦争」を表した語が duo「二つ」の連想で「二人の戦い」へ特化した。関連語は duelist, bellicose。
