解説 Definition

shut は古英語 scyttan「閉じる・かんぬきを掛ける」にさかのぼり、語源的には shoot と同じ系列です。細かな接頭辞分解はしにくい単純語ですが、「ボルトを打ち込む」感覚から閉める意味になったと見ると腑に落ちます。関連語は shoot, shutter。
