shutter
シャッター
解説 Definition
シャッターとは窓や出入り口を覆う板状の開閉装置のことで、防犯・遮光・防風のために使用される。また、写真用語としてはカメラのレンズを開閉して露光時間を調節する機構のことも指す。
A movable cover fitted to a window or opening to block light, weather, or entry. In a camera, it is the mechanism that opens for a controlled length of time to expose the film or image sensor to light.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
shut「閉じる」に -er が付いた「閉じるもの」と捉える。建物では窓などを覆って光・風・侵入を遮る可動板、カメラでは光を一定時間だけ通す機構を指す。close the shutters、press the shutter button という典型表現を場面ごと覚える。
Link shutter with the familiar verb shut. The ending -er helps you see it as “a thing that shuts.” On a building, shutters close over a window or entrance to keep out light, wind, or intruders. In a camera, the shutter briefly opens and closes to control how long light reaches the film or sensor. Remember the two common scenes and their collocations: close the shutters before a storm, and press the shutter button to take a photograph. Both meanings share the same central image of a device controlling an opening.

shutter の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語 scyttan(閉じる、遮る)から派生した shut に動作者接尾辞 -er が付いた語。「閉じるもの」が原義で、窓の鎧戸からカメラの遮光装置まで「光や外界を遮断する板状の仕組み」を広く指す。関連語:shut(閉じる)、shuttle(往復するもの)。
Shutter was formed in English from shut and the noun-forming suffix -er, literally denoting something that shuts. Shut developed from the Old English verb scyttan, meaning “to close” or “to bar.” The word first referred to a movable cover for an opening such as a window. It was later applied to photography because a camera shutter similarly blocks light and opens only for the required exposure time.
