解説 Definition
ドア、戸という意味です。部屋・建物・車などの出入り口を開け閉めする部分を指します。日本語の「ドア」とほぼ同じですが、和風の「戸」にも使えることがあります。
A door is a movable barrier that opens and closes an entrance to a room, building, vehicle, or enclosed space. The word can also refer more generally to the entrance where such a barrier is fitted.

日本語の「ドア」とほぼ同じ基本語ですが、英語では洋風の扉だけでなく一般的な「戸」にも使えます。open the door、close the door、at the door を一組で覚えましょう。door は開閉する板そのもの、doorway はそれを取り付けた出入り口の空間を指します。

doorは古英語duru/dorに遡り、ゲルマン祖語*durz、さらに印欧祖語*dhwer-（戸口）が語源。サンスクリット語dvār、ラテン語foris（戸口→foreign）、ギリシャ語thyra（扉）と同根である。関連語にforeign（戸口の外→外国の）、forum（屋外広場）がある。「建物の出入口」という原義が数千年保たれている基本語。

It is related to an ancient Indo-European root conventionally reconstructed as referring to a doorway. Cognates appear in several old language families, including Sanskrit dvār and Greek thyra.
