doorは古英語duru/dorに遡り、ゲルマン祖語*durz、さらに印欧祖語*dhwer-（戸口）が語源。サンスクリット語dvār、ラテン語foris（戸口→foreign）、ギリシャ語thyra（扉）と同根である。関連語にforeign（戸口の外→外国の）、forum（屋外広場）がある。「建物の出入口」という原義が数千年保たれている基本語。
