politics の語源・成り立ち Etymology
politics はギリシャ語 polis「都市国家」が語源で、polit- は「市民・国家」を表し、-ics は「学・活動」を示します。policy や politician と同根で、もとは「都市をどう治めるか」という市民の営みが、そのまま政治の意味になりました。
Politics comes from Greek words based on polis, meaning "city" or "city-state." The root polit- referred to citizens and public life, and the ending -ics came to mark a field or activity. The word originally centered on how a city-state is organized and governed. From that, it grew into the modern sense of public affairs and government. Policy and politician are related English words.
