中世ラテン語 Russia から。古ノルド語の Rus に由来し、これはスカンジナビアからスラヴ地域に渡ったヴァイキングの一族ルーシ族を指した。Rus の語源は古ノルド語 roðr（漕ぐ）とされ、「船を漕ぐ人々」が国名の起源となった。
Russia comes from Medieval Latin Russia. It is linked to Rus, the name used for a people connected with Norse groups who moved into Slavic lands. Many scholars connect Rus to an Old Norse word related to rowing, so the name may have first meant "rowers" or "people who travel by oar." From the name of that people, it became the name of the country.
