Russia comes from Medieval Latin Russia. It is linked to Rus, the name used for a people connected with Norse groups who moved into Slavic lands. Many scholars connect Rus to an Old Norse word related to rowing, so the name may have first meant "rowers" or "people who travel by oar." From the name of that people, it became the name of the country.
