porpoise は古フランス語 porpais、さらに中世ラテン語 porcopiscus にさかのぼり、porc-「豚」+ piscis「魚」が核です。丸い体つきから「豚みたいな魚」と捉えた名残で、porcine や piscine も同じ語根を含みます。
Porpoise comes from Old French porpais, from Medieval Latin porcopiscus, built from Latin porc- "pig" and piscis "fish." The name meant something like "pig-fish," probably because of the animal's round body. Related English words with the same roots include porcine and piscine.
