文字や文章が不鮮明で読めないこと、または表情・態度などから気持ちや意図が読み取れないことを表す形容詞。物理的に判読できない場合にも、相手の内面がつかめない場合にも使われる。
If something is unreadable, it cannot be read or understood easily. This may be because the writing is unclear, the print is too small, or the text is badly written and difficult to follow. The word can describe both physical text and writing style.

まず readable「読める」を確実に押さえ、その反対が unreadable だと覚えると定着しやすいです。un- は「反対・不可」、-able は「できる」で、英語では wash/washable のように広く使われます。文字なら handwriting is unreadable のように「字が判読できない」、人なら his expression was unreadable で「表情から気持ちが読めない」。単に difficult to read より、見ても読み取れない感じが強い語です。

unreadable は un-「否定」+ read + -able「…できる」で、read は古英語 rǣdan「読み解く」にさかのぼります。reader や readable も同根で、核は意味をほどくことです。だから unreadable は、文字でも表情でも「読み取れない」を表します。
